MOL ASEAN Committee Meets on Protection of Migrant Workers’ Rights

Date:
Tuesday, 12 February 2019

The Ministry of Labour’s ASEAN Committee on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers, met for the twelfth time at the Le Meridien Chiang Rai Resort, Muang, Chiang Rai. The meeting discussed and followed up on the action plan according to the ASEAN Declaration to protect the rights of migrant workers to achieve equality at international standards.

On February 12, 2019, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Suradej Waleeittikul presided over the commencement of the ASEAN Committee’s 12th meeting on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (12th ACMW Meeting) at the Le Meridien Chiang Rai Resort, Muang, Chiang Rai. The meeting was held between February 12-14, 2019, with high-level government officials from ASEAN member countries. The main coordinators were the ACMW Committee and ASEAN Secretariat including international organizations. Approximately 50 people joined the event.
Mr. Suradej said that this meeting was to discuss, track and evaluate the operations, projects/activities under the ASEAN Committee plan on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (2016-2020) as well as seek cooperation to promote and protect migrant workers’ rights and measures to prevent the effects of labour migration and the 4th industrial revolution. Interesting issues that emerged included the self-assessment of ASEAN Member States to drive the ASEAN Committee on its action plan to follow the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (2018 - 2025), to propel the ASEAN consensus by reporting the assessment results to the ASEAN Secretariat to monitor the progress of the implementation/certification (TOR) of the revised ACMW/drafting new project proposals for the 2021 - 2025 plan and the implementation of dimensions that have not been proceeded with.
The results from the meeting will provide concrete and sustainable guidelines/measures to promote and protect the rights of migrant workers, as well as drive and evaluate performance of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (2016-2020).
