According to the 314th session of the Governing Body in June 2012 which will be held after ILO annual conference, the election of ILO Director-General will be held in order to replace the outgoing Mr. Juan Somavia, who announced an early resignation effective on 1 October, 2012. The application and selection process is now undertaken and the hearing of candidates for making their presentation and responding to the questions will be held on 30 March, 2012 as the last day of the 313th session of the Governing Body.

At present, there are 9 candidates who submit their applications to ILO and permanent representative of each nation in Geneva listed below;
– Mr. Jomo Kwame Sundaram, nominated as Malaysian candidate, serves as several positions in United Nations and is an expert in ecomomies, finances, and development.
– Mr. Ad Melkert, a delegate of Netherlands with working experiences with United Nations as well such as special representative for UNAMI in Iraq, member of the World Bank’s board of directors. Moreover, he was a former Minister of Social Affairs and Employment.
– Mr. Guy Rider, British citizen, is a delegate of Worker Union in UK and the Deputy Director-General of ILO. Previously, he was a former leader of UK worker union before serving as worker’s representative in an international level, and then he was supported by worker’s representative to work for ILO, therefore, he is an expert in labour affairs.
– Mr. Gilles de Robinson, a government delegate of France, has experiences both in local (a mayor of Amiens City) and national politics (Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Housing, Tourism, and the Sea and Minister for National Education, Higher Education, and Research). Also, he was a member of French Parliament and French Ambassador for the Promotion of Social Cohesion for promoting ILO’s role in shaping the global face with other organizations.
– Ms. Mona Sahlin, a delegate of Sweden, has a solid background in Education and Social affairs and was a national politician such as member of Sweden Parliament and the Minister in various period responsibilities such as Labour, Infrastructure, Development, and Human Rights.
– Mr. Angelino Garzou, a delegate of Columbia and is the Columbian Vice President who was a former leader of Worker Union, and Minister of Labour as well as member of the Parliament.
– Mr. Charles Dan, a delegate of Banin government and is supported by Francophonie countries.
– Mr. Ibrahim Assane Mayaki, nominated as Nigeria’s candidate, was a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria and the Director of Social Policy Center as well as the lecturer in an International Affairs, etc.
– Mr. Assane Diop, Senegal citizen and ILO Executive Director, was a former Minister of Labour and Employment and Minister of other Ministries related to social sector in Senegal. Also, he has working experiences in international organizations.
In this regard, after the first phase, a special meeting of the Governing Body will be held in order to conduct an initial consideration before voting by members of the Governing Body for the new ILO Director-General in June, 2012. Regarding a voting system, it will use a runoff-voting rule until the winning candidate receives a majority vote of more than one half of the members of the Governing Body entitled to vote.
