A total of 53,000 foreign workers, including 5,600 Thais, will be granted non-professional employment (E9) visa to work in South Korea this year, down by 9,000 from 2013, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Labour and South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labour.

 

 

A total of 53,000 foreign workers, including 5,600 Thais, will be granted non-professional employment (E9) visa to work in South Korea this year, down by 9,000 from 2013, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Labour and South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labour.

 

Calculation of the quota was based mainly on the number of foreign workers in South Korea whose work contract due to expire this year, amounting to 17,400 and those who will be deported from  the country for illegal stay, amounting to 10,000. It is expected that a total of 27,400 foreigners will leave the country this year.

 

This year, the demand for foreign workers by small and medium sized enterprises rose by 36,000.

 

According to South Korea’s government, of the total 53,000 foreign workers, approximately 42,000 will work in manufacturing industry and the rest will be in agricultural, fishery, construction and service sectors.

 

As for the quota of H-2 visa for Russian Koreans and Chinese Korean, the number remains the same at 303,000 for this year from last year.

 

According to results of the meeting of South Korea’s foreign workers policy committee, the government will also grant privileges for companies that provide accommodations for foreign workers and create a work accident prevention policy for 2014.  (End)
