Singapore’s Building Construction Authority (BCA) announced on January 9 that infrastructure development and construction projects on the island country would reach 31-38 billion Singapore dollars in 2014, five percent higher than expected. In 2013, the value of projects reached 35.8 billion dollars.

According to the BCA, projects worth 19-22 billion dollars are owned by the government, covering buildings, civil engineering works such as Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) , Downtown MRT Line Stage 2 & 3 and accommodations.  Projects worth 12-16 billion dollars are owned by private sector. It is estimated that infrastructure development and construction projects will amount to 25-34 billion dollar in 2015 and 2016, with 60 percent of the projects involving building constructions and 40 percent involving civil engineering works.

Due to growth in the building sector, the government announced adjustments on work period for higher skilled migrant workers, allowing them to work in the country for 22 years, instead of 18 years, effectively from May 1, 2014. Workers will also have a chance to upgrade their status into higher skilled workers. Under the so called Market-Based Skills Recognition Framework (MBF) system, workers who have worked in the country for six years and earn 1,600 dollar per month, can undertake a test to upgrade their status without having to take CoreTrade or  Multi-Skilling Certificate tests. Thank to the change and regular demand for Thai workers, the number of Thai workers travelling to work in the country will increase. More are also expected to undertake a test to upgrade their status. Most Thai workers who have terminated their work contract are those who work in the country for less than 10 years and get a job with higher wage.
