Cambodian Workers Happy with Employment in Thailand

Content Description

On 2 February 2017 at 15.00, Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul and committee visit Thai Union Manufacturing to observe and listen to progress on foreign worker management and zoning for migrant employees. The company has 10,000 employees, 4,000 of which are migrant workers. The company has zoned their migrant workers according to nationalities, ensuring fair compensation and benefits to all workers. This includes permissions to set up stalls, caring for utilities, promoting exercise and leisure, ensuring security within the housing units and provision of financial services so that the workers are able to send money back to their families.

Mr. Bonyen Sum, a Cambodian worker aged 28 years, travelled to Thailand through MOU channels. He said, “I have worked with Thai Union Manufacturing for 5 months now and have been residing in the accommodation provided by the company. The accommodation is convenient and only costs 2,000 Baht monthly, which is affordable for me. This means that I have enough money to send to my family. I don’t think I will move to any other company. I can send money back to my family through ATMs at the border, as Cambodia does not have any Thai banks yet. I would like to government to help facilitate money transactions so that we can send it to our families directly.”
