Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Anurak Tossarat gave a speech after observing the employer-employee relationship verification process at the migrant worker reporting centers at the Ministry of Labour’s foyer. He explained that after the migrant worker registration period concluded which started on 24 July and ended on 7 August 2017, the next steps will be the employer-employee relationship verification process which will commence on 8 August to 6 September 2017 totaling 30 days without holidays, to which the Ministry of Labour will be one location for the process. The importance of this process is transform undocumented and illegal migrant workers to a legal status, having the necessary documents in order to avoid any violation of the Working of Alien Act or Immigration Act and to prevent potential human trafficking cases. He said that today, the Ministry of Labour commences processes for migrant workers which have been registered by employers, investigating the validity of the employer-employee status. Once proven correct, officers will issue documentation for employers to take migrants workers onto the next processes.
The Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General and spokesperson Mr. Ananchai shared statistics from the migrant worker registration process across all 100 centers nationwide from 27 July to 7 August 2017. He said that a total of 193,918 employers registered totaling 772,270 migrant workers. The majority were Burmese with a population of 451,515, followed by Cambodian workers with a population of 222,907 and Laotian workers with 97,848 workers. Categorized into industries, the top 5 were construction, agriculture and livestock, food and beverages, services and household professions respectively. The top 5 provinces with the highest migrant worker population were Bangkok, Chon Buri, Samut Prakarn, Pathum Thani and Rayong.
