Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakull spoke at the second CLMTV Ministerial Meeting on Labour in Da Nang, Vietnam. The first day was a meeting amongst senior labour officials, which was attended by Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti and the Social Security Office’s Secretariat Mr. Suradech Waleeittikul, whereas the following day was a meeting among ministers. The senior labour officials’ meeting was attended by ILO and IOM representatives which commended Thailand on leading by example with the bilateral agreements with Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos on migrant worker management. Thailand was also commended on skills development initiatives for legal migrant workers, in alignment with Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha’s ‘never leave anyone behind’ policy. The international representatives also commended directions on Thailand’s social security processes where migrant workers will engage in a continuous social security scheme, even upon returning to their origin countries. In addition to this, Thai people working abroad will also be able to continue their social security contributions when returning to Thailand
General Sirichai added that in the senior officials meeting today, consideration was given to legislation supporting safe migration and human resource development, whereas in the ministerial meeting, country representatives will sign the Joint Declaration on safe migration, including a bilateral discussion with the Burmese and Laotian minister.
