Labour Minister Commences Songkhla EV Skills Assessment Center and Drives “Credit Bank” to Upgrade Electric Vehicle Maintenance Technicians

Content Description

The Labour Minister commenced the Songkhla EV Skills Assessment Center and pushed forward with the “Credit Bank” to upgrade Electric Vehicle Maintenance Technicians. On March 14, 2025, The Ministry of Labour, represented by the Department of Skill Development, moved forward in developing the Thai workforce to support the electric vehicle (EV) industry by opening a “Skill Standards Assessment Center” for Level 2 Electric Vehicle Maintenance Technicians. He also presented skill standard certificates to workers who passed the assessment to upgrade the potential of Thai workers for international competitiveness. Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Labour, along with Mr. Jirawat Maneechote, Deputy Governor of Songkhla Province, Mr. Boonsong Thapchaiyut, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Decha Phrukphatthanarak, the Director-General of the Department of Skill Development, Asst. Prof. Dr. Niwat Kaewpradab, President of Prince of Songkla University, executives, and heads of government agencies attended the event at the Electric Vehicle Development Center, Prince of Songkla University, Songkhla Province.

Mr. Phiphat said that the Skill Standards Assessment Center is an essential tool that helps enhance the potential of Thai workers. It is a source of certification of workers’ abilities in various professional fields, allowing skilled workers to receive official certification and confidently enter the labour market. It will enable skilled workers to prove their abilities and receive a certificate of skill standards that is recognized nationally and internationally, increasing employment opportunities and higher incomes, supporting the country’s target industries – especially the electric vehicle industry, where Thailand needs highly skilled workers to support the expansion of the EV market and create international skill standards – enabling Thai workers to compete internationally.

Mr. Phiphat reiterated that the Department of Skill Development has signed an MOU with educational institutions to implement the “Credit Bank” project, a shortcut to career advancement. It is a system that allows workers to accumulate credits from training and labour skills standard assessments to be used as evidence of their abilities and to apply for jobs or request for salary adjustments.

“The Labour Skill Standards Assessment Center and Credit Bank will be an important tool in developing Thai workers to be of quality and ready to compete in the global market,” concluded Mr. Phiphat.

Mr. Decha Phrukphatthanarak, the Director-General of the Department of Skill Development, continued that EV working skills are the future. Skill assessment centers are key, especially for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, which is one of Thailand’s target industries (S-Curve) and requires highly skilled workers. Therefore, having an EV worker skill testing center will help Thailand produce workers that meet the needs of the industry. The Department of Skill Development is ready to cooperate with the private sector and educational institutions to expand EV labour skill standard assessment centers nationwide, develop EV knowledge to keep up with technology and support students and workers who want to build their skills for the EV market. For those interested in assessing their skills, please contact the Department of Skill Development or Electric Vehicle Development Center, Prince of Songkla University.
