On February 24, 2022, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin spoke about the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha’s concern for the Thai people residing in Ukraine amid the tension between Ukraine and Russia. The Prime Minister has closely monitored the situation and cares for all Thai people. The Ministry of Labour has asked Thai workers working in Ukraine to be vigilant and closely monitor the situation, information, and news from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) for prompt preparations. If there is an emergency, it is necessary to evacuate back to Thailand. Workers must strictly follow the instructions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry of Labour’s Department of Employment can assist with the fund to help job seekers working abroad. The fund can help Thai workers who have experienced suffering, including if Thai workers who are members of the fund encounter problems and must return to Thailand due to war, unrest, natural disasters, or pandemic. The official announcement of the respective countries has also included working abroad following the law.
Mr. Suchart said that 139 Thai workers are presently working in Ukraine (data as of January 2022). This includes 116 self-traveling workers and 23 re-entry workers, most of whom work in massage and spa positions. A total of 126 people are members of the fund to help job seekers work abroad.
