Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Boonchob Suttamanaswong, spoke about the case of a Thai husband and wife being murdered in Taiwan on June 10. The names of the deceased are Mr. Prasert Norat, 32, a native of Ubon Ratchathani, and Ms. Potjanee Chaelee, 36, a native of Chiang Mai. The Ministry of Labour asked the Department of Employment to investigate. They found that Mr. Prasert had traveled to work through an employment agency in 2017 and applied to the fund to help job seekers work abroad. When his contract expired, he returned to Thailand but later returned to Taiwan, married, and lived with Ms. Pojanee with a permanent residence card. Currently, both have no Thai worker status and are no longer protected under the fund to help job seekers work abroad.
Mr. Boonchob added that as soon as they heard the news, the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense General Prayuth Chan-ocha and Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who supervises the Ministry of Labour, showed concern and expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased. Therefore, the Ministry of Labour was assigned to check the status and take care of legal benefits. The Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, responded to the said order and instructed the five labour leaders under the Ministry of Labour in Ubon Ratchathani Province, led by Ubon Ratchathani Labour Officer Mrs. Wimuttiya Awutthewin. They visited the family at their home to build morale and encouragement for the deceased relatives. The Social Security Office has also checked Mr. Prasert’s insurance status. He used to be insured under Sections 33 and 40 before. The benefits to be received from the Social Security fund is 15,496.42 Baht. The Ministry of Labour assigned the Ubon Ratchathani Social Security Office, which is the domicile of the deceased, to visit the area to give the said benefits to the family directly.
