The Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General Mr. Soothi Sukosol, revealed the status of the ratification of ILO Convention 111 concerning discrimination in respect of employment and occupation, 1958. He said that Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul’s report showed policies aimed to speed up the ratification of ILO conventions in order to resolve human trafficking and illegal labour issues. He explained that the ratification of ILO Convention 111 is currently under process of gaining approval from various units to verify alignment with relevant laws. The next step will be arrangement of a meeting for the working team, to give further consideration to ILO Convention 111 in March. This will then be presented to the Cabinet for further approval in April, and then a letter will be issued to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to register ratification to the ILO Director-General in May 2017.
Mr. Soothi further explained the essence of ILO Convention 111 concerning discrimination in respect of employment and occupation, 1958, which covers a total of 4 aspects; freedom of association and the right to negotiate, elimination of all worst forms of labour, effective abolishment of child labour and elimination of discrimination in employment and occupation.
“The ILO Convention 111 is one out of eight conventions that the Ministry of Labour is prepared to ratify to eliminate discrimination in employment and occupation. This includes race, ethnicity, gender, religion and political opinions. This will help promote equality of opportunities in employment and occupation,” said Mr. Soothi.
