The Ministry of Labour’s Spokesperson, Mr. Phumiphat Mueanchan, said that the Labour Minister, Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has instructed the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare and related agencies to follow up on the resolution of the case of 700 Myanmar migrant workers who gathered to demand unpaid wages from their Chinese employers in the Rojana Industrial Estate, Prachin Buri Province on August 16. Initial investigations by the Ministry of Labour found that the problem was caused by the delay in the inspection process and the international money transfer from the parent company in China. Labour inspectors and company representatives discussed and paid employees 500 Baht each to alleviate their hardships on August 17, 2024. The company promised to improve financial supervision by paying wages in cash and having company representatives oversee them systematically, starting from August onwards. The payment date has been set for August 21, 2024, at the construction site.
The Ministry of Labour’s Spokesperson said that this Myanmar workers’ rally is under the law and took place in a private area, which can be controlled and did not escalate. On Monday, August 19, at 13.30 hours, labour inspectors from agencies under the Ministry of Labour and related government agencies inspected documents on labour protection and the employment of migrant workers in order to set guidelines for solving the problem and urge employers to comply with the law.
“This group of workers is construction workers for the 3-story factory building, including a roof deck and related structures of the 50-rai electronic parts and circuit board manufacturing plant. The site was invested in by IFound PCB (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and received funding from the Chinese government for the construction. Chang Cheng Co., Ltd. brought in the workers for the construction and subcontracted with the main construction contractor, CHEC (Thailand) Co., Ltd. The construction period was set from February 2024 to March 2025. In the first contract, the construction of the 3-storey factory building was scheduled to be completed in October 2024. Currently, construction is about 70% complete,” said Mr. Phumiphat.
