Labour Minister Joins Forces with the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand to Drive Adoption of GLP

The Ministry of Labour joins forces with an MOU to drive Good Labour Practices (GLP) between the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare (DLPW), the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of Trade of Thailand to enhance labour management.
          The Labour Minister, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, gave a speech after presiding over and witnessing the Memorandum of Understanding on Good Labour Practices (GLP) signing ceremony on September 15, 2022, at the meeting room on the 5th floor of the Ministry of Labour. He said that the government had given importance to labour management, considering the participation of employers and employees to protect labour and human rights. The efforts are in line with the 20-year national strategy that targets the country to increase its competitiveness, supporting the development of the country towards stability, prosperity, and sustainability. Therefore, the Ministry of Labour by the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare encourages employers/business establishments to adopt the Good Labour Practice (GLP) guideline, which is one that businesses can use to improve employment and working conditions, to create standards for treating workers that are comparable to international labour standards. It focuses on improving workers’ quality of life to prevent and solve child labour, forced labour, discrimination, and human trafficking. He also expressed appreciation to the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand for promoting and encouraging member enterprises, including those involved in the supply chain of member establishments, to implement Good Labour Practices (GLP) to manage the organization’s workforce. Such organizations are good role models for other business establishments.
          The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare’s Director-General, Mr. Niyom Songkaew, further said that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare (DLPW), the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of Trade of Thailand is an important step that demonstrates the commitment of the public and private sectors that share a commitment to conducting business with social responsibility in terms of labour, in line with the Good Labour Practices (GLP). Such efforts strive to create sustainable business and stability, resulting in products and services being accepted by customers and consumers in the global trading arena. It increases the potential and competitiveness in trade and serves as a model for other enterprises to take as a guideline for good labour practices.           Mr. Poj Aramwattananon, Vice Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Labour and Skill Development Committee, the Board of Trade of Thailand, said that over the past ten years, the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand, has solved labour problems such as the use of illegal foreign workers and IUU fishing. The efforts have been together with the government and government agencies, especially the Ministry of Labour, in proactively tackling labour issues, moving Thailand to rank in the Tier 2 group in the TIP Report 2022. The Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand recognize that ethical business practices will drive organizations and the country towards success and sustainable growth. Today, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trade of Thailand, and trade associations that are primary members, including the Thai Tuna Industry Association, the Thai Frozen Food Association, the Thai Pet Food Trade Association, the Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association of Thailand, are committed and ready to join in promoting and supporting member organizations. This covers over 110,000 businesses nationwide, including the supply chain of member establishments, supporting the adoption of Good Labour Practices (GLP) to boost Thailand’s reputation in producing Thai products and services that respect human rights.
