Labour Minister Leads Team to Observe Skills Development in Kanchanaburi to Improve Worker Productivity in Sugarcane Harvesting

The Labour Minister led the committee to Kanchanaburi visited the workplace to observe labour productivity development activities using skill standards, for sugarcane harvesting drivers and vehicle maintenance workers, to meet the needs of the market and build skills to keep up with technology for higher wages.

            On November 11, 2019, Labour Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol and the ministry’s executives listened to a briefing on the mission and observed labour productivity development activities using skill standards of Thai Phum Poon Industry Co., Ltd, Wang Sala, Tha Muang, Kanchanaburi.
            Thai Phum Poon Industry Co., Ltd has implemented the “7 craftsmen skills project” so that knowledge is not lost with retirees, and to increase labour productivity among new employees. The Kanchanaburi Skill Development Office introduced the standardization of labour skills under Article 26, which corresponds to the objectives of the establishment. The standardization was prepared and certified by the Skill Development Promotion Board for skilled workers and professionals in sugarcane harvesting, for sugarcane harvesting drivers. The company uses professional skills standards as a tool to measure the skills of employees which is a guideline for creating courses and developing skills that match needs. It is also a guideline for determining special compensation and assessing employee performance, in which employees will receive compensation according to their abilities or considered for promotion and receive training to develop skills to keep up with changing technologies.
            Furthermore, the Kanchanaburi Skill Development Office and Thai Phum Poon Industry Co., Ltd have already created 25 trainers who are speakers to transfer the “7 craftsmen skills”. There is also a training room and kit (simulator) for sugarcane harvesting drivers, who train in both theory and practice. For the practical side, the harvesting drivers use a simulator to become proficient first before becoming a sugarcane harvesting driver. As for the measurement of skills, the company uses standard skills assessment for sugarcane harvesting drivers at the level 1 capacity. The target group is employees of Thai Phum Poon Industry Co., Ltd employees, members of the sugarcane farmer association and general public.
            The Kanchanaburi Skill Development Office works with Thai Phum Poon Industry Co., Ltd to, departments under the Ministry of Labour, the Kanchanaburi Industry Association, The Kanchanaburi Sugarcane Farmers Association and companies that sell sugarcane harvests. The success of the project will increase the number of sugarcane harvesting drivers to meet the demand. Employees will also have skills that meet the standards and requirements, and those who have trained and have passed the labour skills standards which will also increase wages.
