Labour Minister Monitors Progress of 4 Northern Provinces

         On 12 January 2017 at 09.30 hours, Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul visited labour offices in the Northern region to follow up progress on operations. The provinces included Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Lampang and Lampoon. The meeting was attended by the Ministry of Labour’s executive members, leaders from affiliated units at the local level and members from the private sector including the president of the Federation of Thai Industries’ provincial chapters, president of provincial Chamber of Commerce offices and labour volunteers. The meeting was held to follow up progress in alignment with government policy as well as the Ministry of Labour’s own plans. This year, the Ministry of Labour has changed its role and expanded its missions to drive visits to all areas in order to create understanding and monitor resources. The visiting committee followed up progress on the 8+1 labour reformation agendas and alignment with the 20-year strategy on human resource development, as well as listened to obstacles and advice presented by meeting participants. The information gathered will contribute to policy design and smoother operations.

           The Labour Minister reminded the Ministry of Labour’s officials and officers of the late King’s sustainable economy philosophy and collaboration both with internal and external parties. He asked all to continue driving important policies and missions for true success, improving the lives of the people and driving the nation forward. The Labour Minister then presented policies to local offices to connect and collaborate with relevant stakeholders towards a Thailand 4.0. He emphasized the spread communication and knowledge with regards to policy, operations and results amongst businesses, employers and employees. General Sirichai Distakul reminded participants to remain free and eliminate corruption, human trafficking, slavery and child labour in worst forms within the respective local areas for the nation’s better future.           

           The Labour Minister gave a speech after the meeting saying, “Chiang Mai is a province with high potential in terms of tourism and spa, human resource development and as a logistics hub. Therefore we give great emphasis to the preparation in these 4 provinces to ensure the workforce can support a Thailand 4.0. We have a 20-year strategic plan to drive our missions; the first five years will focus on foundations, workforce preparation and resolution to different obstacles. It will also concentrate on training officers to focus and truly understand situations and relevant problems for effective solution. In preparing for a Thailand 4.0, the Ministry of Labour will need to develop people of different groups and align understanding. For example, agriculturist will need to adjust to new ways. The most important factor is skills which must be developed consistently. In 2017, we will focus on following up and monitoring all provinces to ensure all obstacles are acknowledged.”
