Labour Minister Mourns Thais Who Died in Korean Plane Runway Crash: Permanent Secretary Instructs 5 Labour Leaders to Visit Relatives and Take Care of Social Security Benefits

            Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Labour, expressed his condolences for the incident where Jeju Airlines flight 7C 2216, traveling from Bangkok to Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea, had an accident while landing. The plane’s wheels did not deploy, causing the plane to skid along the runway and catch fire. The incident occurred yesterday morning at approximately 09.07 hours local time. On the Ministry of Labour’s part, the Labour Minister received a report from Ms. Sirirat Srichat, Assistant Labour Attaché at the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The report said that the airline was carrying 181 passengers, 175 of whom were passengers and 6 crew members. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that there were 179 fatalities, of which 2 were Thai passengers. The first was Ms. Jongluck Duangmanee, aged 45, from Udon Thani Province, who was insured under Section 39. Her beneficiaries are entitled to receive a retirement benefit of 109,751.28 Baht (excluding interest), a death benefit according to the period of contributions, and the funeral expenses of 50,000 Baht. The Udon Thani Provincial Social Security Office will help beneficiaries ensure they receive their entitlements. The second Thai fatality was Ms. Sirithon Cha-ue, aged 22, from Chiang Rai Province, who is not an insured person.

            Mr. Phiphat added that he and the Ministry of Labour’s executives expressed their condolences to the families of all the deceased. On the Ministry of Labour’s part, the Labour Minister received a report from Mr. Boonsong Thapchaiyut, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, that the agencies under the Ministry of Labour or the five Labour Leaders have visited the area to give encouragement to the families of the deceased Thais and facilitated the beneficiaries to receive their entitlements.

            “All the Ministry of Labour’s officials and I express our condolences for the Jeju Airplane incident which happened at Muan International Airport, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea. The Ministry of Labour will take care of the benefits of the insured to the best of our ability,” said Mr. Phiphat.

            Mr. Boonsong Thapchaiyut, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, said that he has responded to the Labour Minister’s instructions and has directed the Minister Counselor (on Labour) in Seoul, Republic of Korea, to closely monitor the situation and coordinate assistance with the embassy to bring the deceased’s bodies back for religious ceremonies according to the wishes of the families. As for the operations in Thailand, he received a report from the Ministry of Labour’s agencies in Udon Thani Province that yesterday (December 29, 2024), the five labour leaders in Udon Thani Province went to the area with the delegation of Mr. Ratchan Soonhua, Governor of Udon Thani Province, relevant agencies, and local leaders to visit and give encouragement to the father and relatives of Ms. Jongluck Duangmanee, aged 45, at house number 38/1, Moo 6, Kut Mak Fai Sub-district, Nong Wua So District, Udon Thani Province. For Ms. Jongluk Duangmanee, an initial check in the electronic system of the Overseas Employment Administration Division, Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour, found no information on her travel to work abroad and no information on her membership in the fund to help job seekers go to work abroad. The Ministry of Labour, through the Labour Attache, has coordinated with the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul to return the body of the deceased to their relatives for cremation ceremonies in their home province.
