Labour Minister Moves Forward in Comprehensive Support for Insured Persons

            Labour Minister M.R. Chatu Mongol Sonakul has moved forward in supporting insured workers and instructed the Social Security Office to issue urgent remedies and improve measures to be in line with the continuing spread of the Covid-19 virus.

            M.R. Chatu Mongol Sonakul revealed that since initial occurrences of the Covid-19 virus in Thailand, it has now become a crisis. The Labour Minister has instructed all of the Ministry of Labour’s departments to place measures to support workers, whereby the Social Security Office’s measures which have passed the Cabinet are:

  1. Reducing employer and employee contribution rates under Section 33 and 39.

– A total of 13,346,143 insured persons will receive benefits.

2. Extending the period for employers and employees in submitting contributions under Section 33 and 39.

             – A total of 488,226 employers will receive benefits.

             – A total of 1,653,714 insurers persons will receive benefits.

  1. Increasing unemployment benefits due to force majeure and expanding the rights to cover unemployment due to the termination of employment and resignations.

  2. Promoting employment by extending the duration of the employment promotion credit facility for 30,000 million Baht.
  3. Support by the Social Security Office by increasing treatment rights for insured persons that are at risk and insured persons who are ill with the Covid-19 infection, equal to the three funds.

            M.R. Chatu Mongol Sonakul further said that the above measures had been implemented, leaving only the enforcement process. From closely monitoring the situation, the spread of the virus is still ongoing. The Ministry of Labour has also adjusted measures to help workers and insured persons. Most recently, on Sunday, March 29, 2020, a meeting was convened on guidelines to amend the ministerial regulations to remedy insured employees and to set rules so that insured persons are entitled to benefits in the event of unemployment due to force majeure for no less than 5,000 Baht a month each. This matter will be brought to the Cabinet meeting for consideration as soon as possible.

            On this occasion, reporters also inquired the Social Security Office’s Secretariat Mr. Todsaphon Kritwongwiman about employers and employees submitting contributions, including the application for benefits during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. To be safe, Mr. Todsaphon clarified that the Social Security Office has electronic services channels, which employers and insured persons can access and find more details about on www.sso.go.th.
