Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul spoke after the 2017 National Labour Day, where he said that Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha had expressed his care for all levels of the workforce. He said that over the past year, the Ministry of Labour has worked in accordance with government direction on preparing for the “Future of Work” and a Thailand 4.0. The Labour Minster confirmed that the workforce’s fear of unemployment in entering a Thailand 4.0 would not happen, and that the workforce would experience better income and more valuable work. He said that the Ministry of Labour would survey the population of the 1.0 – 3.0 working groups, and analyze the necessary development in each group.

General Sirichai continued that this year’s labour demands involved legislative amendments and informal worker protection, whereby a survey was being conducted amongst several groups such as hawkers, small stalls, motorbike taxis, taxis and other freelance professions on social security and more. The Ministry of Labour has also improved its services such as its Smart Job Center, e-Services (80 percent complete) and other self-service options.

In the morning, the Labour Minister chaired the alms offering ceremony at the Ministry of Labour, and then led the procession honouring King Bhumbol Adulyadej, King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun and the workforce to the Army Grounds on Viphavadee Rangsit, alongside the ministry’s executives and officials. The procession then moved to the Bangkok Youth Center (Thai – Japanese) in Din Daeng.

This year, labour leaders presented 5 demands including: Ratification of ILO Convention 87 and 98, reform of the Social Security Office, amendment of legislation to protect and improve the lives of informal workers, supporting legislation to develop enterprises into private organization and the enactment of royal decrees on fund collection and contribution for the welfare fund.
