On Sunday 6th November 2011, Labour Section of the Royal Thai Embassy in Tel-Aviv went to inspect Thai workers in Zikhron Ta’skov, as part of the embassy’s 2012 fiscal year Mobile Consular Service, under which mobile passport facility are offered to Thai people and workers at their doorstep.
Upon the visit to the city, officials met with Thai workers working at Mashav Ben Yamina, whose owner, Mr. Lyo Fye, runs an orchard industry.
The workers said various types of fruit are grown at the orchard, including pomegranate, strawberry, peach, apple, and orange. It has an area of several thousand square rais. Some 55 workers including 25 Thai, one Vietnamese, and 29 temporary workers, work there.
According to them, each worker has income of at least 3,000-4,000 shekel per month. His employer always works hard and does not want them to hang out with workers from other moshav. They do not have many chances to spend the money they earn and therefore, can send much money back home.
They said they live in the same house as their owner and their rooms are located downstairs. His owner determines public holidays for workers different from other owners. On Songkran Festival, for instance, workers are allowed to take leave on April 12 instead of April13.
