On February 21, 2022, at 09.30 hours, Academic Labour Advisor Mrs. Napasorn Toongsooksai presided over the commencement of the meeting to listen to stakeholders’ opinions on the research report on the quality of life of the platform workers. Advisor to the Labour Minister Dr. Chamlong Chuayrod attended the meeting at the Eternity Ballroom, Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel (Rangnam). He said that the Ministry of Labour by Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin is concerned about workers in all occupations, especially informal and self-employed workers who still lack protection, support, development, and appropriate social security. Therefore, they pushed the bill to promote the development of a quality of life and protection of informal workers B.E. …. to the Cabinet meeting on December 28, 2021. The Cabinet approved in principle the draft law, which was sent to the Council of State for review. This is the first successful step for informal workers to be protected, supported, developed, and socially secured, leading to a better quality of life. It also aims to prepare and work in parallel before law enforcement. With the support of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the Ministry of Labour has implemented a project to drive policy proposals on the quality of life of platform workers. Platform workers are considered as a group of informal workers. At present, many people choose this career. However, issues were found with working conditions, compensation, work safety, and welfare. This is another step for the Ministry of Labour to showcase its role and reform the informal workforce management system by brainstorming opinions from all sectors and providing opportunities to society to jointly consider policy proposals on the quality of life of platform workers. Through academic research, studies can truly answer society’s problems and make academic achievements acceptable. All sectors can apply the proposals for consideration in formulating policies, guidelines, and directions to enhance the quality of life of informal workers concretely.
Today’s seminar aims to listen to opinions from stakeholders to improve the policy proposal on the quality of life of the platform workers to be more complete. The meeting was attended by representatives of government agencies, the private sector, academics, and platform workers, totaling 130 people.
