MOL Commences Seminar on Future of SEA: Labour Migration, Skills and Growth

Content Description

Today (April 9, 2019), Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Jarin Chakkaphark assigned Assistant Permanent Secretary of Labour and Acting Inspector-General Mr. Somsak Apiwantanakul to chair the opening ceremony of the seminar on the future of Southeast Asia: labour migration, skills and growth. Participants included representatives from ASEAN member states, the ASEAN Secretariat, the IOM, the ILO, the private sector and educational institutions, including a total of 60 stakeholders. The objective of the seminar was to be a platform to exchange experiences, good practices and initiatives to promote effective labour mobility within ASEAN.
International labor migration in the ASEAN region is one of the measures to stimulate economic growth and development of the region. At the same time, it moves skills around, promoting high labour productivity, competitive ability and sustainable economic development in both the recipient country and the sender of labour. Furthermore, it promotes listening to comments, exchange of experiences and good practices from all stakeholders which will encourage the determination of effective labour migration policies, resulting in safe labour migration and decent work for migrant workers.
On the same occasion, Mr. Somsak Apiwantanakul spread awareness on celebrations for the ILOs 100th anniversary on April 11, 2019 at the Ministry of Labour.
