Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul assigned Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Singhadet Chu-umnart to lead Thailand’s representative committee at the ASEAN ministerial conference on labour, which took place from 19 – 20 February 2017 in Davao, Philippines. The conference was also attended by the Bureau of Coordination for International Cooperation’s Director-General Mr. Chaiyos Yoosup, who led representatives at the senior official level. The conference discussed the drafting of an ASEAN document on labour protection and rights.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour said that the retreat was separated into 2 levels which was for senior official representatives on 19 February 2017 and the ministerial level on 20 February 2017. Participants included labour ministers from Laos, Myanmar, Singapore and Philippines, as well as permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries, directors and senior officials from the 10 ASEAN nations. The ASEAN Secretariat was also present at the meeting.
“The conference was attended by ministers and senior officials on ASEAN labour issues, discussing principles of the ASEAN declaration on migrant protection and rights. The 3 items discussed included the legal status of drafted documents, the rights of illegal migrants and the rights of migrant workers’ dependents. The meeting gave consensus to the drafting of documents without any legal binding, but to be considered as a declaration of intent under the Cebu Declaration,” said Mr. Singhadet.
