Today, 28 February 2017 at 09.30 hours, Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti chaired the advisory committee meeting on projects to promote protection of migrant worker rights in the ASEAN, known as the ASEAN Triangle Project, for the first time this year. Before commencing the meeting, she said that the advisory committee would meet to monitor progress of the projects second phase which spans 10 years. She explained that the project has received academic support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) to strengthen Thai labour inspection staff, as well as amend relevant policies and regulations in working with NGOs and labour networks. The Permanent Secretary said that the meeting today would consider the 2017 action plans such as supporting amendment of policy and laws relevant to migration of labour, research on working conditions for migrant workers in the agricultural industry, a survey of expenses for migration, an evaluation of efficiency and enforcement of government policy ensuring no fees and control of recruitment business importing migrant workers into construction, agriculture and fishing industries for instance. If the 2017 action plans are approved, they will be formulated into a 10-year phase action plan where a meeting to monitor progress will be arranged twice each year.
