The Ministry of Labour participated in the opening ceremony of the Colombo Process Workshop for Labour Diplomats, to discuss regionally, analyze the labour market and promote fair employment.
Today (December 3, 2018) Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Jarin Chakkaphark assigned Assistant to the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Somsak Apiwantanakulto jointly chair the Colombo Process Workshop for Labour Diplomats at the Landmark Hotel, Bangkok. The conference was organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The thirty participants included labour diplomats, government representatives from the 12member countries of the Colombo Process and international organizations. Thai labour diplomats included Advisory Minister (on labour) from the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and Abu Dhabi. The Colombo process is a regional process that focuses on the management of international employment and contracted labour for Asian workers. It’s Thematic Area Working Groups (TAWGs) are key mechanisms of action, whereby the Working Group on Labour Market Analysis is one of the five working groups of the CP, with Thailand as chair of the working group.
Today’s workshop was an activity by the Working Group on Labour Market Analysis and Working Group on Fair Employment Promotion Principles with the purpose to provide a forum for labour diplomats of member countries in the Colombo Process for consultation and exchange of best practices about 1) Tracking and analysis of data, the trend of the labour market in recipient countries and the return of data back to the origin country to inform the decision of the executive to set up employment policies abroad, and skill development to deliver skilled labour to meet the needs and trends of the labour market in recipient countries and promote access to valuable work (decent work) 2) Protection of rights, mechanism of complaints of labour and the monitor of performance of employment agencies in recipient countries to prevent unfair employment and exploitation.
