The Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General and spokesperson Mr. Ananchai Uthaipatanacheep spoke about the ministry’s policies for efficient foreign worker management in various provinces. The policies aim to ensure that entry of migrant workers meet both international standards and comply with human rights. In the past, migrant workers were found residing in many different communities, which resulted in numerous issues such as drugs and crime, hygiene and disease, pollution and substandard accommodation facilities. This was particularly found in provinces with large populations of migrant workers such as Ranong and Samut Sakhon.
The Ministry of Labour thus initiated measures to manage the over 50,000 migrant workers in the 13 provinces, comprising Samut Sakhon, Ranong, Pathum Thani, Chon Buri, Samut Prakarn, Surat Thani, Chiang Mai, Nonthaburi, Ranong, Phuket, Songkhla and Tak. Collaboration has been sought from the provinces to promote zoning of workplace and accommodation for migrant workers, which could also lead to potential employee benefits such as transportation services. Zoning is also beneficial as it helps eliminate public issues, manage pollution and helps effective community and societal management.
“Zoning is still in the early initiation phase and will require consultation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning and the Department of Land on the impact of selected areas on the surrounding environment and community. The idea will also require input from the people, employers, employees and other relevant parties to ensure the more effective outcome,” said the ministry’s spokesperson.
