The Ministry of Labour discussed parallel activities on decent work, inclusiveness and equality for migrant workers in South East Asia. The ministry emphasized that the government gives importance to developing the valuable work agenda in cooperation with all parties to create equality and raise labour standards to international levels.
On March 28, 2019, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Jarin Chakkaphark assigned Inspector-General, Mr. Somsak Apiwantanakul to chair the discussion on parallel activities decent Work, inclusiveness and equality for migrant workers in South East Asia at the 6th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) held between March 27 – 29, 2019 at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), United Nations Building, Ratchadamnoen Road, Bangkok.
Mr. Somsak said that the Thai government has always given priority to developing valuable work agendas by establishing a 20-year national strategy (2017-2036), which is a long-term country plan under the policy of “Thailand 4.0” that focuses on changing the economic and social structure to “stability, prosperity and sustainability” with technology, innovation and creativity. The Ministry of Labour has established a strategic framework for the development of human resources over a period of 20 years (2017 – 2036) following valuable work or decent work goals. In addition, the Ministry of Labour has also collaborated with the ILO and related parties on establishing a national plan for valuable work in Thailand for 2019-2021. This is the first plan for the country and is in the process of collaborating with many agencies/countries both bilaterally and multilaterally. This includes the right to the ship-to-shore project, the Safety and Justice Program: Rights and Opportunities of Women Migrant Workers in the ASEAN Region project, the project to promote and protect labour rights across projects, the sustainable supply chain development project in Asia and cooperation programs for strengthening the enforcement of global labour laws for example.
“I affirm that Thailand is ready for all creative cooperation, to jointly develop the labour force and raise labour standards to international levels, for a fair future that benefits everyone in society in a comprehensive and equal manner, causing valuable work for everyone and not leaving anyone behind,” concluded Mr. Somsak.
