MOL Strengthens Employment and Income for Informal Workers

          The Permanent Secretary of Labour commenced the project to enhance professional and social stability among the informal and household worker population in Maha Sarakhram province at the Sri Suk Administration Office in Kantharawichai district. She commended all 22 groups of household workers (fashion bag seamstresses) which could generate an average of 20,000 Baht per month. She said that the Ministry of Labour would have a representative to give advice to the workers when needed. In addition to this, she said the Ministry of Labour was responsible for over 38 million workers comprising 11 formal workers and over 20 million informal workers, whereby providing professional training and ensuring professional and social stability. On this occasion, the Permanent Secretary also presented funding to 6 household worker groups.
          The Permanent Secretary further stated that the Ministry of Labour had devised informal worker management strategies as a tool to improve the quality of living in terms of protection, promotion and development, through close collaboration with relevant units. The efforts are aimed at 3 main issues including social security, knowledge and professional opportunity enhancement and improvement of management capabilities. The ministry is currently forming a second informal management strategy for 2017-2021.
          “The activities organized to promote informal workers will be of great benefit to household workers in all 22 targeted groups who will receive skills development in design which can help in reducing manufacturing costs. In turn, this will serve as income to group members in the future,” said the Permanent Secretary.
