On September 16, 2022, Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin reported that the Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who oversees the Ministry of Labour, gives importance to enhancing equality in the basic rights of workers working in Thailand, whether Thai or foreign workers, ensuring they are treated equally. Such workers are key in driving the country’s economic and social development. It strives to manage migrant workers effectively, in line with the labour demands by businesses, and the direction of the national economy, in which efforts are driven by the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Employment.
Assistant Permanent Secretary of Labour, Acting Lt. Somsak Promdam, led the team to visit the area to observe the road show activities following the project to create awareness and understanding of the policy on the management, import, prevention, and protection of rights of migrant workers. The occasion took place at the Chiang Mai Provincial Employment Office, Mueang District, Chiang Mai Province. The Office of the Permanent Secretary of Labour’s Public Relations Division organized the roadshow to educate migrant workers working in Thailand, for them to participate in supporting and promoting the use of legal labour and preventing labour trafficking. Foreign workers who work in Thailand legally are protected in terms of benefits and welfare that align with human rights principles and are equal to Thai workers in all respects.
Chiang Mai has around 80,000 foreign workers, with workers gradually receiving work permits. Most are Myanmar workers, accounting for 90% of the workers who followed the guidelines provided by the Cabinet’s resolution on July 13, 2022, which is around 70,000 people. The Chiang Mai Provincial Employment Office has gradually delivered the work permits to workers in the neighborhood, especially in Mueang District and San Sai District. As for workers in other districts, they will deliver work permits to employers to distribute to workers in each area.
