On 17 August 2017, the Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General and spokesperson Mr. Ananchai Uthaipatanacheep gave a press briefing on progress of the employer-employee relationship verification process from 8 to 16 August 2017, totaling 9 days. He explained that a total of 55,713 employers totaling 188,542 migrant workers had been processed, with 3,805 not passing the criteria. The main reason was because the migrant workers were not employed before 23 June 2017, followed by workers being underage. Mr. Ananchai said that the process would be completed within 30 days as planned. Closer to the deadline, the Ministry of Labour will evaluate the situation to consider if an extension is needed for centers unable to complete the process on time.
Mr. Ananchai stated, “On 15 August, the Cabinet approved framework for drafting the Labour Protection Act Edition……..B.E…….. advising the legislative draft be sent to the Office of the Council of State for further consideration. This is good news for the workforce as the legislation aims to improve labour protection from current measures such as allowing a minimum of 3 paid business leaves, increased benefits for maternity leave which currently allow a 90-day maternity leave, 45 days of which are paid and the allowance of additional compensation in the event of termination for employees with 20 years of service years or more, whereby providing compensation equivalent to 400 working days,” concluded the ministry’s spokesperson.
