On Sunday 12 June 2011 during 09.00-17.00 H.E. Mr. Apichart Phetcharatana, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Bandar Seri Begawan led the groups of The Federation of Thai Industries ‘officials, office of Labour Affairs in Brunei’s Team, Thai election committee in Brunei, and Thai labour volunteers to provide the overseas election service at the election unit; the Sea view Hotel, Kuala Belait where there are a large proportion of Thai workers working in and far from Bandar around 100 Kilometers. Moreover, there are plenty of Thai workers working in construction and oil sectors; consequently, the election service had facilitated Thai workers and those living in KB, Seria, Mumung, and Anduki. On this occasion, The Royal Thai Embassy facilitated two buses as free services for the whole day.
In addition, the election had been carried out in a smooth manner and at the beginning of the election; many Thai workers had come to exercise their voting rights in particular during 09.00-12.30 pm. After the election was closed at 17.00 pm, the Thai Ambassador and the committee had mutually counted the votes which were found that there were 418 people voting their rights or 11.467% of registered persons. Also, this election had received loads of media attention from Thailand such as a phone interview to Thai Ambassador across the country.
According to the data, there were 3,645 Thai workers in Brunei registering for the 2011 overseas election (the 13th place out of 93 places in world ranking considering from the amount of registered people that signed up with the Thai Embassy/Consulate nationwide). However, The Royal Thai Embassy will organize the election again on Sunday 19 June, 2011 at Veemarsetia Building, Ban dar as the 2nd batch and the 3rd batch will be held on Friday 24 June 2011 at The Royal Thai Embassy.
Office of Labour Affairs in Brunei, therefore, invites Thai workers and Thai citizen living in Brunei to exercise their voting rights during 09.00-17.00 pm by presenting one of these documents such as Thai identification card, passport or passport photocopy, the ID card with photo and 13-digit ID number issued by government agencies, state enterprises or Thai independent entities. It is recommended that Thai citizen could go to use their voting rights for the whole day and according to the experience at KB, the morning session was quite crowed, while the afternoon were much better and more convenient.
