Puntrik Smiti welcomed Mr. Maurizio Bussi, Director-General of the ILO and Mr. Anna Engblom, Senior Coordinate for the Triangle Project 2, upon consultation for projects promoting protection and rights of migrant workers in the GMS triangle. The meeting took place at the Permanent Secretary’s lounge on 27 January 2017, with aims to reduce opportunities for exploitation of migrant workers through recruitment policies and effective working framework on recruitment and labour protection. This will help promote tripartite abilities to implement national policy, particularly Thailand in Chiang Mai, Tak, Bangkok, Samut Prakarn and Rayong.

The Permanent Secretary gave an interview after the meeting where she said, “This project focuses on promoting good recruitment practices for foreign workers. There are 6 countries implementing this project including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The participating countries spread awareness of each nations’ policies and legislation, and work to develop stakeholders relevant to foreign worker services and centers. The Triangle Project 2 will benefit the Ministry of Labour’s work by improving recruitment of foreign workers, and to add value to the GMS Triangle Project 1 by providing channels of report, improving labour inspections, resolving foreign labour shortages and promoting safe migration. The Ministry of Labour has assessed the ILO’s activitie under the Triangle Project 2 in collaboration with the public and private sectors, and sees that the ministry should increase involvement for better efficiency.”
