Content Description

On January 21, 2022, at 13.30 hours, Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Boonchob Suttamanaswong, and Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Thailand, Mr. Giuseppe Busini, co-chaired the opening of the National Advisory Committee Meeting on the Safe and Fair Project: Rights and Opportunities of Women Migrant Workers in ASEAN (via electronic media). Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mrs. Tongjai Suthat Na Ayutthaya, also joined the meeting at the Saengsingkaew meeting room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour. The Permanent Secretary of Labour thanked the European Union for their support of the Safe and Fair Project and the UN, ILO, and UN Women’s teams and partners for supporting the implementation of the project. The Ministry of Labour is pleased to be involved in the Safe and Fair project. It is ready to work with all sectors to promote effective protection for women migrant workers, guarantee safe and normal migration, prevent human trafficking, and eliminate violence and harassment in the world of work. The government has taken temporary and urgent measures, providing waivers for migrant workers where the visa or work permit has expired, allowing them to stay and continue to work in Thailand legally. They have also provided an in-depth examination and search for undocumented migrant workers to encourage workers to be registered, have identity documents, and work. This will allow such workers to receive full protection and help maintain the workforce for employers.
Mr. Boonchob added that the Ministry of Labour cooperated with various parties in distributing food to the construction worker camps during the implementation of measures to limit workers’ movement. The effort helped to alleviate the suffering of workers. It also provided vaccinations for Section 33 insured persons in the social security system and the Factory Sandbox project, which has helped prevent infection among Thai and migrant workers, reducing the occurrence of virus clusters. Migrant workers have also benefited from such measures.
