Permanent Secretary of Labour Partners with EU to Commence Discussions on Resolving Labour Issues

Content Description

The Permanent Secretary of Labour commenced the Thailand – EU Labour Dialogue, 2nd High-Level Meeting, to exchange knowledge, experience, and good labour practices.

On February 13, 2020, Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Suthi Sukosol and Mr. Joost Korte Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL) co-chaired the Thailand – EU Labour Dialogue, 2nd High-Level Meeting. The Ambassador of the European Union to Thailand Mr. Pirkka Tapiola and the Ministry of Labour’s executives also joined the meeting, which took place at the Amari Watergate Hotel Bangkok, Thailand.

The Permanent Secretary of Labour said that over the years, Thailand has had significant and continuous development of labour and the improvement of relevant laws, especially in labour protection in the fishery sector. Thailand ratified ILO Convention No. 188 on working in the fishery sector, 2007, to become the first country in Asia and Pacific Thailand is well supported by the European Union through the Ship to Shore project operated by the International Labour Organization. Although the said project ended last year, the Thai government, by the Ministry of Labour and relevant agencies, will strive towards sustainable measures on standards of labour protection in the fishery sector. It hopes that from discussions, including a study visit at the PIPO and rehabilitation centers by the Social Security Office, the collaboration will be extended for more concrete and joint actions between Thailand and the European Union, which may be discussed in detail in the academic conference or other related meetings.

The Ministry of Labour hosted this meeting, whereby both parties will have the opportunity to exchange information on important economic and social development policies, including updates of important labour developments and to reflect on the successes resulting from the cooperation between the European Union and the Ministry of Labour. The cooperation allows both parties to identify current and potential labour issues for both parties, and to collaboratively find solutions. It is an opportunity to exchange knowledge and share experiences with each other, especially in priorities including the informal economy, social protection (social security) and skills development, which resulted from the second academic conference between November 29 – 30 2018 in Bangkok. In addition, on February 14, 2020, there will be a study visit at the Port-In Port-Out Command Center Region 1 (Samut Sakhon) and Workers Rehabilitation Center, District 1, Pathum Thani Province. The outcome of this meeting will be a collaboration on policies to lead to further in-depth discussions in academic meetings or other related meetings.
