Permanent Secretary of Labour Reports Labour Situation for April 2024; Unemployed Registered Persons Decrease, Employment in the Service Improves

     On June 6, 2024, the Permanent Secretary of Labour, Mr. Pairoj Chotikasathien, spoke about the overall labour situation based on the data of April 2024 by the Labour Economics Division under the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour. Currently, 11,857,864 workers are insured under the social security system. Insured persons under Section 33 increased by 1.70 percent compared to the same month of 2023, when there were 11,659,514 people, but a decrease of 0.21 percent compared to March 2024, when there were 11,882,607 people.

     Mr. Pairoj added that in Thailand’s unemployment situation, 228,840 unemployed people were registered in the social security system in April 2024. Compared to 2023, this was an increase of 0.93 percent, and compared to March 2024, an increase of 4.74 percent. The unemployment rate in the social security system in April 2024 was 1.89 percent. The number of insured persons registering for unemployment through the online system for registering and reporting insured persons for unemployment was 84,401 people, which decreased from March 2024 by 766 people or by -0.90, and a drop from the same period of 2023 by 3,220 people or by -3.68.

     “The data is a reflection that the overall employment situation of insured persons under Section 33 has improved from the same month last year, especially in accommodation, restaurant, trade and transportation, and product storage sectors, which are recovering well. While the unemployment situation has increased from the same month of the previous year, sectors that still have high unemployment and layoff rates include telecommunications, postal activities, package delivery, film, video, and television programs production affected by rapid changes in information technology today, combined with increased business competition,” said Mr. Pairoj.

     Mr. Pairoj added that in terms of assistance measures for those who are unemployed, he has instructed the Department of Employment to prepare for job matching for those who are having problems. Currently, there are 505,553 vacancies accumulated. The top 5 vacancies nationwide are 1. Assembly workers and product packing workers. 2. Store sales staff and product demonstration staff, advertising sales staff and brokerage representatives, and technical and commercial sales representatives 3. Other office staff. 4. Warehouse staff. and 5. Document delivery staff, baggage porters, and other transport workers. The efforts are believed to be able to provide relief.
