Today (11 May 2017), Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul chaired the committee meeting for the 12th ASEAN Skills Competition at the Department of Skills Development’s Pakorn Angsusingh Conference Room. The competition is arranged under agreement by ASEAN member nations and the project on skills development within Asia Pacific, organized for the first time by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Shiba, Japan in 1993. Since then the competition, which is listed as an activity under the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint, has been hosted every two years with member nations taking turns in being host. The competition aims to promote self-development amongst the youths and working population in ASEAN, being update with technology and international labour standards which will promote better output and services.
On 24 May 2016, the Cabinet approved for the Department of Skills Development to host the 12th ASEAN Skills Competition which will include 24 formal categories and 2 demonstrative categories. These are divided into 6 professional groups including manufacturing technology, communication technology, fashion and creativity, transportation and logistics, construction and building technology and personnel and social management. The competition categories will depend on the committee which is represented by all member nations who will conclude the categories this September.
