On 29 May 2017, the Ministry of Labour’s Inspector-General and spokesperson Mr. Ananchai Uthaipatanacheep as the ministry’s spokesperson, reported the ministry’s meeting minuets at the Press Room on the fifth floor. The report covered 4 issues including the participation of the 106th International Labour Conference in Geneva, where Labour Minister General Sirichai Distakul will join the meeting with employer and employee representatives from 11-17 June. The participants will meet with Labour Ministers from all ASEAN member nations to discuss guidelines on managing and resolving labour issues together. From there, they will meet the ILO Director-General to register ratification of ILO Convention 111 concerning Discrimination in Respect of Employment and Occupation. Nations that have ratified the convention are obliged to have policies and measures on employment and occupation to prevent any discrimination. On this occasion the Labour Minister will give a speech at the meeting on the importance of “green jobs” in Thailand.
On the topic of workplace safety, the Ministry of Labour has signed an MOU for the Safety Thailand project with 6 ministries, aiming to reduce the number of workplace accidents in construction, fire, transportation and chemical hazards. The MOU will be extended to involve another 4 ministries including the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of Education. The MOU also involves the private sector such as the Federation of Industries, the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand. In addition to this, the Ministry of Labour will organize the 31st National Health and Safety Event on 29 June – 1 July 2017 at BITEC, Bangna. The event’s organization will be supported by the various ministries under agreement and will include academic seminars, exhibitions and various activities promoting workplace safety.
Mr. Ananchai said that the Labour Minister had plans to visit the ministry’s affiliated units in 6 Northeastern provinces from 1-2 June, where he will listen to obstacles faces and suggestions from the private sector in order to plan solutions. The Labour Minister will also visit Phoenix Pulp and Paper Public Company Limited and Cho Thavee Public Company Limited in Khon Kaen.
