Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Boonlert Teeratrakul spoke on the occasion of chairing the opening ceremony for the ‘”International Safety and Health Week 2017” which took place at the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare in Taling Chan. He said that the event was organized like those in member countries, to show the determination and preparation in driving Thailand’s health and safety standards to internationally recognized levels. Thailand has ratified ILO Convention 187 on Occupational Health and Safety 2006, effective as of 24 March 2017 and ratified on 23 march 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland. Thailand announced that it would use it’s master plan on national workplace health and safety (2nd edition) for 2017-2021 and further announced the second phase (2017-2026) of the national agenda on “quality workplace safety and health” where all relevant ministries will work together to achieve set goals.
Mr. Boonlert said that this year’s International Safety and Health Week was organized under the theme of increasing efficiency in storing and using health and safety data to strengthen foundations on preventative innovation. He explained that an accurate information database would be the core of safety and health development, where the short-term would start with the government and then the private sector in the long-run in alignment with the government’s 4.0 policy on innovation and technological advancement.
“In Thailand, we still do not give as much importance to safety as we should which has led to many losses. All parties need to help each other campaign and spread awareness to create a safety culture to reduce potential accidents to ourselves and society,” said Mr. Boonlert.
