Safety Thailand Policy to Boost Awareness

         Deputy Permanent Secretary of Labour Mr. Boonlert Teerakul chaired the commencement of “10 May the National Workplace Safety Day for 2017” which took place at the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare (in Taling Chan). He explained that the department arranges the event annually to emphasize and create awareness of workplace safety, as 19 years ago (10 May 1993), a hazardous fire erupted at Kader Industrial, a plastic doll factory in Nakhon Pathom which claimed the lives of 188 employees and injured almost 500 more. The incident resulted in 60 orphaned children. The Deputy Permanent Secretary said that spreading awareness would reduce the risk of such losses and would help the government financially in terms of compensation payments. He reiterated the importance of workplace safety and prevention through quality systems and collaboration from all relevant parties in preventing problems in the future.
         The Deputy Permanent Secretary further stated that the “Safety Thailand” policy initiated by the government and Ministry of Labour, aimed for enhancement of safety measures nationwide, particularly in the workplace, on roads, construction sites and in agriculture. The Ministry of Labour has given great importance to workplace safety and health of the workforce whereby driving legislation and promoting development of health and safety systems in the workplace.
