Taipei Labour Office Reports “Taiwan Plans Test Run for Importing Foreign Labourers in Agriculture”

             At present, Taiwan has been experiencing a continual shortage of labourers in the agricultural industry. In the past, agricultural businesses have pleaded the government to be open to importing foreign labourers. Towards the end of December 2014, Mr. Chuen Pao Jee, Chairman of the Agricultural Business Committee (equivalent to Minister) announced to the Taiwanese parliament that the committee had plans for a test run to import foreign labourers to the agricultural sector in June 2015.

          As for the details and criteria of importing foreign labourers to the agricultural sector specified the following:

         1) Only allow the import of foreign labourers to mushroom and orchid farms, fruit gardens, tea plantations and slaughter houses.

         2) Employers must employ 4 local workers to 1 foreign worker.

         3) No restrictions in employment destination.
