Taiwan hirings forecast to drop by 7% in first quarter
The number of employers planning to hire during the first quarter of next year will be reduced by 7 percent compared to the current quarter, a poll conducted by the Manpower Group stated.
According to the poll on hiring needs in the first three-month period next year, 31 percent of employers plan to hire new employees, 5 percent plan to downsize, 60 percent plan to keep their staff sizes unchanged, and 4 percent haven’t decided yet. The figures translate into an employment outlook ratio of 26 percent for the first quarter of next year, the highest in the world. It is followed by 23 percent for India and 21 percent for Brazil. The poll was part of a series of surveys Manpower conducted on 65,000 enterprises across 42 countries and regions. Of the 65,000, 1,010 were Taiwanese. Although 31 percent of Taiwan employers plan to hire in first quarter next year, the figure was still a decline of 7 percent from the 38 percent for this current quarter. It is considered that Taiwan employers will take a conservative attitude when it comes to hiring in the beginning of next year,” she added. “It seems to us that employers are more interested in retaining employees and keeping them from going away.
By industry, the top three with the biggest hiring needs are the service industry, the transportation/infrastructure industry and the retail/wholesale industry, the poll showed. The poll coincided with a survey released in the beginning of the year by the Council for Labor Affairs (CLA), which found businesses are expected to hire some 26,000 people in the first quarter next year, a reduction of over 20,000 year-on-year and the lowest in three years, According to the CLA survey, wholesalers, retailers and operators in the hospitality industry are expected to hire some 7,600 people, a reduction of over 50 percent from the first quarter this year, despite the bump that comes with Chinese New Year, which occurs during this quarter
