Taiwan opens new labour ministry

On February 17, 2014, Taiwan held a ceremony to officially open a labour ministry. The ceremony was attended by President Ma Ying-jeou and Prime Minister Jian Yi-huah. Ma said an establishment of the Ministry of Labour demonstrates that another advance step of the public organisation and labour and workers-related services.

President Ma also said that over the past six year, the government has achieved several labour policies, including establishing annual labour welfare system and labour benefits fund, providing allowance for infant care leave, expanding labour laws, adjusting minimum wage upward six times, extending retirement age act and improving enforcement of labour safety laws. The Ministry of Labour in future will carry out operations to improve labour environment and labour market. Ma also called for business sector to improve payment and monthly wage, saying that the economy went well last year so business operators should share their wealth with their workers.
