On 29 August, the Taipei city’s Department of Labour will hold the award-giving ceremony for foreign workers who win the award in the 2010 annual foreign workers poetry & essay writing competition at the headquarters of the Taipei municipality. In this way, Mr. Hau Lung-bin, the Mayor of Taipei, will preside over the award-giving ceremony.
On 29 August, the Taipei city’s Department of Labour will hold the award-giving ceremony for foreign workers who win the award in the 2010 annual foreign workers poetry & essay writing competition at the headquarters of the Taipei municipality. In this way, Mr. Hau Lung-bin, the Mayor of Taipei, will preside over the award-giving ceremony.
The poetry contest for foreign workers is held annually to give foreign workers in Taiwan opportunities to submit their entries. The competition is categorized in both poetry and essay writing. Last year, one Thai worker won the superb honorable mention award.
As for the 2010 competition, there are a total of 2,502 entries to the competition with 18 award recipients for both poetry and essay writing. This could be categories to 1-3 poetry writing winners, 3 superb honorable mention poetry awards, 6 excellent honorable mention poetry awards, 1-3 essay writing winners, and 3 superb honorable mention poetry awards. The winners will receive the prizes and the honor shield. The award winning entries will be translated in Chinese, published and given out to foreign workers, contestants, relating agencies, and libraries.
This year, Thai workers win a superb honorable mention award and an excellent honorable mention award in the poetry writing competition. The works include the poem “inner strength” written by Mrs. Roongnapa Srinatheethandhon and the poem “Relying on Virtue” written by Mr. Aumporn Nava. In the essay writing competition, the essay “The Reflection of Foreign Workers” written by Mr. Aran Mokhee wins a superb honorable mention award.
Among poetry and essay contest winners, the essay of Mr. Aran attracts interest from Taiwan media the most. This is because Mr. Aran is a detainee in the Taipei Central Prison. His writing is essay to understand and describes his sorrow experience to warn his Thai fellows to turn over the new leaf before they face the same destiny as him. (This phase appears at the end of his essay.) Mr. Aran is also the first foreign detainee to win a prize from activities organized by Taiwanese authorities.
As for the award-giving ceremony on 29 August, the Office of Labour Affair in Taiwan will receive an award in the place of Mr. Aran and will deliver NT$5.000 prizes and the honor shield to Mr. Anan at Taipei Central Prison.
