Thailand-Laos Sign MOA on Employment Promotion

Content Description

Labour Minister General Sirichai Disakul and Laotian Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Dr. Kampaeng Saisompang, signed a Memorandum of Agreement on employment between Laos and Thailand.

Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti and the ministry’s executives also joined the signing ceremony which took place at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Hua Hin, Petchaburi province. The agreement aims to ensure protection and rights for workers of both nations, ensuring they remain free of exploitation throughout the employment cycle, from signing the employment contract to returning home.

The agreement on employment was formulated to promote collaboration between Thailand and Laos, emphasizing alignment with labour demands for economic growth and improvements in society, protection of right and anti-human trafficking efforts. The agreement highlights legal frameworks for fair and non-discriminatory employment, a clear outline of procedures including pre-departure training, occupational protection, information database management and designation of expense allocation for workers returning home.
Some of the important topics discussed included improving efficiency in the arrangement process of workers entering through MOUs, reporting company names permitted to import foreign workers to Thailand, services provided by the foreign worker coordination center and consideration for measures taken to speed up the nationality verification process for Laotian workers. The establishment of the MOA will promote closer working ties between the two nations, ultimately leading to more efficient employment processes to support economic and social development in both countries.
Thailand has already signed MOUs and MOAs on employment with numerous CLMV countries included Vietnam in July 2015, Cambodia in December 2015, Myanmar in June 2016, Laos in July 2016 and today with Vietnam.
