Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti chaired the seminar on acknowledgement of the (draft) wage rates for 16 professions in accordance with the skill standards. The event took place at the Fortune Ballroom at the Grand Mercure Fortune Hotel in Bangkok, on Ratchadapisek Road. She said that in developing the workforces’ potential, wage rates matching skill standards would be a good framework for the workforce to benchmark themselves to the demand of each industry. At the same time, she said that wages would need to be fair and reflect the standard of skills so that the workforce is able to improve themselves to meet the standard level to earn higher incomes. The Ministry of Labour has already announced the wage frameworks for 67 professions and on this occasion, would consider adding 16 professions in 4 industries.
The objective of the seminar was to have participants acknowledge and understand the national skill standards and wages, then share facts, comments and suggestions about the (draft) skill standard wage rates for 16 professions in 4 industries. These included 1) the metal industry comprising electric arc furnace makers, ladle heating furnace mixers, casting workers and oven supervisors 2) the plastic industry comprising plastic injection molding technicians, plastic bag blowing technicians, blow molding technicians and technicians on plastic bag blowing machines maintenance 3) the furniture industry comprising staff preparing raw materials for the real wood furniture industry, staff producing wood furniture parts with automatic machines, wooden furniture assembly staff and real wood furniture painters 4) the shoe industry including shoe cut-out template workers, shoe shapers, shoe seamstresses and shoe assemblers. The Wage Committee Office will present the conclusions from the seminar to the subcommittees involved in the 4 professional industries, which will then be used to improve the (draft) of the wage rates. These will then be presented to the Wage Committee for further approval.
