Wages for Senior Workers to be Finalized in 3 Months

            On 29 March 2017 at 11.30, Permanent Secretary of Labour M.L. Puntrik Smiti chaired the 19th Wage Committee meeting for the third time this year. After the meeting, she explained that academics were invited to calculate an appropriate wage to conclude all potential impacts. The information would be used to explain to stakeholders the criteria taken into consideration, and the new formula used for calculations which involves over 10 factors. The meeting also discussed establishment of a subcommittee on wage rates for senior workers. Policies permit authority to the Wage Committee to consider wage structures other than the minimum and standard wages depending on skill sets, such as hourly wages for senior workers. This is currently under study and is expected to be concluded within the next 3 years. The Permanent Secretary concluded that the overall national economy was improving with employment and unemployment rates remaining at stable levels.
