On 24 January 201, Office of Labour Affairs in Malaysia was requested to go and help 2 Thai massage therapists (from Khon Kaen and Pathum Thani). The two massage-therapists were not satisfied with their employment condition and wanted to go home but could not because their employers refused to return their passports and still owed them some payment.
The two massage therapists were persuaded to travel to work at Amanwadi by their Thai friends as they were told that they would receive good payment. Amanwadi is a massage shop locating at No. 130 Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi 60000 Kuala Lumpur. The two massage therapists worked there for approximately 1 month. They accepted that they had neither employment contract nor work permit.
Office of Labour Affairs in Malaysia travelled to the address to negotiate with Mr. Gerald Goh, an owner of the massage shop, and he finally gave the passports and payment owed to the Thai massage-therapists. He claimed that the rest of the payment owed to the Thai massage-therapists will be used to compensate for the fine by the police after they were arrested on charges of not having work permit and not being allowed to work. He also said that the two therapists required his training and that the money he owed to them will be compensated for the training fee. However, the two Thai massage-therapists accepted the money and traveled back to Thailand.
Mr. Goh seeks to hire employee illegally and intend to take advantage of his staffs. Office of Labour Affairs in Malaysia sees that Thai people should know the truth and be careful not to be lured to work illegally. This is because if labour dispute occurs, employees will be the one to be taken advantage of and risk of being arrested by Malaysian authority.
Office of Labour Affairs in Malaysia would like to give a warning for one more time that Malaysian Authority has maintained a quota on the employment of massage-therapist (except in a case where an employee has the old quota). In any case, Office of Labour Affairs will have to approve all employment contracts before an employee is allowed to work legally. Other types of employment will be illegal.
